Mix together nuns, sex, whore houses, temptations of the flesh and you will get a recipe for controversy and seeing that it was 1947 when this was made, I'm sure it would have been.

Five missionary nuns head to the Himalayas to establish an Anglican school at an old bordello. Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr), has to deal with the envy of one nun (Kathleen Byron), the bitterness of an atheist (David Farrar) and the cruelty of the elements. Winner of Academy awards mainly for Best Art, this is visually a very beautifully movie. A little slow in parts but it did have some captivating scenes.

I particularly enjoyed Sister Ruth's red lipstick scene, which encapsulated the crux of the movie. Kerr and Byron's similar facial features (not sure if intended) emphasized the duality between Sister Clodagh and Ruth who had lost her faith. I loved the intense closeups and facial expressions, they really bought the audience in close. David Farrar's high shorts where too funny and Jean Simmons as a native Indian was very tempting indeed... DIDOMAN - 5/9
